Review:
The Apparatus
'Matter Of Time' EP
Review By
Graham Emmerson
Although you may not
find it advertised on
any government run
tourism website, Wales
has a fantastic
burgeoning rock-scene.
The Apparatus are the
latest band to poke
their young heads over
the valleys and think
“All this could be
ours”.
Clearly, and admittedly,
influenced by The Pixies
and Foo Fighters there’s
also hints of Nirvana in
some of Rhys Edwards’s
anguished and aggressive
howls. Bizarrely on ‘All
On Me’ some of the
guitar work is very
reminiscent of early
Oasis. They could also
have that mainstream
accessibility falling
squaring between
Manchester and Seattle’s
finest.
On highlight ‘Counter
Culture’ Edwards sings
“This is really
happening again” as if
years of frustration and
bile are ingrained in
every syllable.
However the best music
gets under your skin
like some kinda sci-fi
parasite, tightens
around your heart until
you’re under it’s
control and ultimately
changes your life.
Unfortunately none of
the songs on this E.P
manage that feat. It may
be slightly harsh to
criticise a new,
unsigned band for not
writing the greatest
song in the world ever,
but even after many
listens no track manages
to stay in the head, let
alone the heart.
The Apparatus are
clearly technically
accomplished though and
aren’t even two years
old. With a number of
new songs waiting to be
committed to tape,
there’s every chance
they can turn it up a
couple of notches and
produce some special
next time.
