Review: "Don’t cry
in public" by Hello
Tokyo
Reviewer: Lucy Moore
Brooklyn
Based ‘Hello Tokyo’ are
a four piece indie rock
band who have been
making waves all across
New York and spent the
summer hopping across
the U.S on the Vans
Warped Tour. Opening
track ‘rain or shine’
packs a lot in, bringing
elements of classical,
punk and even a bit of
electro into the melting
pot. The next offering
‘Don’t cry in Public’,
shows off singer Kat’s
superb vocal talents in
an almost falsetto
fashion which perhaps
indicates her classical
training. This is backed
up by the next song
‘Waiting for a change’
which occupies much of
its time as a soft piano
ballad, building into a
snarling rock monster
with a slightly cuddly
edge, infused with an
orchestral feel.
‘Pull the trigger’ seems
to take a lot from
Blondie, as does ‘Hatch’
which starts unusually
with an organ and some
squelchy funk kind of
sounds and breaks down
at the end into a Latin
conga party. Final song
‘My torment’ strips back
down to basics again
with the bands best
instrument, Kat’s voice
being used to its full
effect.
