Single Review: Brakes

A supergroup of sorts, Brakes, have never surpassed the brilliance of ‘All Night Disco Party’. With this new single, they still haven’t. That’s not doing this song a disservice, it just misses that free spirited, probably ironic, joyousness of their career highlight.

This starts off with what sounds like a deranged, lashed up farmer singing “God came down said I’m fucking bored’ while no doubt waving a pitchfork in the nearest direction of any outraged religious types.

With a ramshackle feel reminiscent of Sebadoh or Dinosaur Jr and a driving guitar just about holding everything together this is the sound of a band that could implode at any moment. It’s also the sound of a band having fun with some genuinely amusing yelped lyrics.

Any song that claims God likes a drink of whiskey and a gamble has to be worth a listen.
