Gig Review: The Horrors,
Rescue Rooms,
Nottingham, 29/03/07

From the moment The
Horrors walked on stage,
the crowd started
buzzing.
Faris
Rotter, the band’s lead
singer, with hair almost
as large as he is, is an
official card-carrying
screaming wild man of
rock. The rest of the
band - Joshua von Grimm
(guitar), Tomethy Furse
(bass), Coffin Joe
(drums), and Spider Webb
(organ), seemed intense
and focused on their
playing.
The intensity of this
band’s stage presence
has to be seen to be
believed:The Horrors totally
dominated the venue.
Here are five guys who
know how to ROCK!
Opening with Jack the
Ripper, one of their
most fan-friendly songs,
white and red strobe
lights flashed away
rapidly; dry ice rose in
the air; the band looked
something like a cross
between The Beatles and
Motorhead - with a fair
dose of the Sex Pistols
thrown in for good
measure.
While most of the band
focused on their playing
and imposing stage
presence, Faris, the
half-crazed front man,
climbed on top of the
footlights; he climbed
on top of the amplifier;
he leapt into the crowd
(from a height) during
at least four of their
songs; he socialized
with groupies, and a few
would-be groupies, who
groped him as he sang;
he walked through the
crowd, climbed on top of
the bar and sung while
walking up and down it.
This was rock at its
finest: Loud, sweaty and
out of control.
The show only lasted
about half an hour – but
this was a genuine,
big-league performance.
There’s a lot to be said
for quality over
quantity – and I’m sure
that at the end of this
gig, Faris, in
particular, had given
every last drop of
energy to the crowd. In
fact, it’s amazing he
wasn’t carried off on a
stretcher.
This was one intense
show, and great fun from
start to finish.
Like the rest of the
crowd, I had a great
time at The Horrors’
gig. Okay, they only
played for about
thirty-or-so minutes,
but what they played was
great – and performed
with style bigger than a
747. This was no mere
gig - this was an event!
The band gave their all:
Together they whipped
the crowd into a rocking
frenzy – and what more
can anyone ask for from
a band?
The Horrors are a band
that is seriously going
places: Their live act
is electrifying, and
their stage presence is
BIG. Certainly too big
for this venue; maybe
too big for this earth.
You owe it to yourself
to see The Horrors live.
That’s all there is to
it.
The Horrors: Bigger than
a big thing; getting
bigger all the time.
