Back in October whilst
covering Manchester’s
annual best in new
comers music festival,
In The City, I came
across a Scottish band
playing in the tiny
Night and Day Café going
by the name of
The Dykeenies.
They did indeed impress
with their raw
disco-rock vibe and
catchy pop tunes. Six
months later it’s great
to see the band in full
swing on a bigger stage
as part of this tour.
Sounding much fuller and
polished, the Glaswegian
Quintet are certainly
destined to be donning
venues like this in the
year ahead. Finishing
their set with latest
single New Ideas, they
leave us with a totally
energetic and sweat
ridden performance. No
doubt they’ve gained a
few fans tonight. Add
them to your myspace
now!

Next
up it’s those lovely
Pull Tiger Tail
boys. Not obvious on
first impressions in the
way a lot of new London
indie bands appear to
be. No sign of matching
jet black skinny jeans,
uniform haircuts or
overdone eyeliner here.
They don’t have a shred
of arrogance about them,
but they do display a
well-deserved
confidence.
Surfer haired front man
Marcus has a distinctive
vocal, which compliments
the eccentric rock n
roll feel to their set.
Quite un-dismissible as
another bland indie
outfit, PTT blend
elements of grunge, punk
and indie so
effortlessly that their
sound creates slightly
heavier rock songs than
your average synth band
and for the record,
works out ten times
better. Put on your
tiger mask and get
dancing! After all
girls, you can’t go
wrong with cat loving
rock stars.
Looking around tonight
there’s an eclectic mix
of music lovers from
retro chic students to
groups of skinhead lads
sporting Fred Perry polo
shirts and Burberry
jumpers.
Old/young/drunk/sober,
everyone wants to hear
Sam. Who’d have thought
this clash of cultures
all have Sam Duckworth’s
music and ideals in
common?
His
own name might sound
like that of a soap
character but there’s no
denying the on stage
persona of
Get cape. Wear cape. Fly
is something you can’t
take your eyes off. His
entrance is met by loud
screams, which don’t
retire for the whole
hour and the audience
sing almost every word
to every song.
He
has been called a modern
protest singer, perhaps
a new age Bob Dillon but
whatever his political
aims, his showmanship is
outstanding. Sam has
come along way since
gigging with a laptop;
tonight he shines with a
full band adding ska and
jazz into the equation.
Behind him video clips
of his plight play on a
massive screen, no doubt
to ensure his lyrical
message is not to be
underestimated. Telling
stories about his
adventures in the world
of politics between
songs convey the passion
behind his music. He
creates a brilliant
atmosphere and the
Liverpool crowd is top
form, the sense of unity
in the room is
definitely something to
get excited about. When
an artist makes this
much impact you know
he’s going to be around
for some time. See him
live, he won’t
disappoint.
