The Mighty Boosh - 16th March 2006

Newcastle City Hall
16th March 2006

Come with us now on a journey through time and space . . . . to the world of the Mighty Boosh. A magical place created by the Perrier Award winning double act of Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt. Unjustly tucked away in the deepest depths of the BBC3 schedules, their surreal brand of comedy is fast becoming a cult classic.

In the days leading up to the live show I came to the realisation that I hadn’t been this excited about comedy since seeing Vic and Bob way back in 1996. With such high expectations founded on their stellar TV series’ “the Boosh” were going to have a lot to live up to.

There was a Rocky Horror mentality among the audience with many having chosen to come dressed as their favourite characters. Within five minutes of arriving at the City Hall I’d spotted Naboo, the Hitcher, Rudy and Bollo. The prize for best costume has to go to the brave soul who came as Old Gregg, resplendent in his wedding dress and complete with a brightly lit downstairs mix-up.

You either get “The Boosh” or you don’t. There is no halfway, you either love it or are completely nonplussed by it. As the lights dim and the crowd fall silent you can almost smell the sense of anticipation in the air. These are die hard Boosh fans and when Barratt and Fielding make their entrance they are greeted by rapturous applause.

Given this tour has another month to run I don’t want to spoil things too much for those who haven’t seen it yet. I’ll just say that all the old Boosh favourites are here. Even incompetent zoo manager Bob Fossil puts in an appearance. Vince Noir and Howard Moon’s adventure is as dangerous and magical as ever as they race to find the mystical Ruby of Kukundoo. There are a lot of laughs along the way not to mention the hilarious musical interludes. There is drama, tragedy, and the ultimate in big happy endings. Howard displays his skills in the art of mime and Vince invents a new game involving a giant rabbit. Barratt and Fielding prove themselves to be, as Vince might say, genius.

Given the high expectations I had I’m pleased to say The Mighty Boosh live doesn’t disappoint.
