MP3 from Marcy
Playground is a good fun
album, combining pop
with rock with subtle
humour. The second track
on the album Blood In
Alphabet Soup, made me
laugh with the mock
Nirvana, Teen Spirit
intro. The album tries
its hand a mocking
pop-culture, music and
politics through cheesy
sounding tunes, like
Rock and Roll Heroes and
Punk Rock Superstar,
which mock the obvious,
and Deadly Handsome Man
and Flag And Finger
(which doesn’t commit to
any real opinions, just
vaguely takes on
politics in pop style).
The more serious
sounding Jesse Went To
War, Sleepy Eyes and
Barfly appear to me to
be the strength of the
album. Tracks like Paper
Dolls stick in your head
with a feel good flow
and lyrics like “Blah
blah blah blah, feels so
good to be alive, blah
blah blah, life was
easier at 5.” and
resemble The Presidents
Of The United States Of
America. Death Of A
Cheerleader is a great
sounding track using
cheerleader chants to
spell out words in
harmony with the song.
The album flows from
start to end in great
transition and for
people new to Marcy
Playground will leave
them impressed with a
smile on their face,
this is a worthwhile
album.
