You can’t say Living
Things are just having a
laugh; they’re fighters
for their own cause,
which can only be an
admirable thing. This
record, in fact, was
released two years ago,
but various fuck-ups
with management, even
resulting in the band
getting dropped and
their album shelved,
prevented this
album-long anthem for
the angry from being
released over here. Not
any more.
It’s a crime that this
piece of life-affirming
pure rock was kept
locked away from the
country that is, after
all, the very home of
said genre. Opening
belter ‘Bombs Below’ and
‘Bom Bom Bom’ hold very
British links with the
likes of Rolling Stones,
with some mellower
strains of Idlewild in
one of the stand-out
tracks, ‘New Year’. The
vocals are smooth,
subtly aggressive at
times, content and sweet
at others, with raw
guitar licks throughout,
sounding both untamed
and gentle. Behind all
that is the BRMC beat,
that unlike a lot of
lazy bass sections,
cannot be ignored.
Just in case this record
does disappear again,
get it while you can.
You won’t regret it.
