Derby boys Leon aka
Leon Black, Lee Horsely,
James Kersey and Martin
Holland-Lloyd launch
their assault on the
charts this month with
their debut album Uppers
and Downers. Except it’s
not so much an assault
as a bit of name-calling
and some pushing and
shoving.
The first three songs
‘Be there’, the single
‘Getting in to you’ and
‘One day’ sound like
they’re probably the
songs Athlete thought
not good enough for
their album! ‘Getting in
to you’ which Leon’s
label Infected call
simple, joyful and
goddamn catchy is a
dull, boring and a
little irritating to be
honest.
Damon-Albarn-sounding
Singer/Songwriter Leon
Black claims he got his
inspiration from the
Beatles which I find
impossibly hard to
believe! It is much more
likely he heard the
Beatles stuff and
decided to go in the
completely opposite
direction!
But just as you’re about
to lose all interest in
the album, the band seem
to suddenly wake up.
‘Giving it all away’ is
a catchy track with
meaningful lyrics and a
decent melody (something
which the first three
songs seem to be
distinctly lacking!)
Uppers and downers is
actually a very fitting
name for the album with
some potentially good
songs and some
absolutely awful ones.
Track Six ‘Wonderful’ is
a heartfelt tune that
sounds not dissimilar to
Aqualung, which is no
bad thing if you’re
aiming for a pretty
Indie love song.
The rest of the album is
marginally better than
the first half, I’d even
go as far as to say some
of it is pretty decent.
However it’s easy to see
this album is not really
going to make much
impact and I’m amazed as
to why “getting into
you” was chosen as the
first single. Must do
better next time boys!
