collaborator strikes out
on his first solo album.
A classic singer
songwriter that recalls
the more gritty efforts
of Soul Asylum’s Dave
Pirner. Kastner cuts
loose from the get-go on
opener ‘Kick Back’ a
rocker of intent with
fantastic hooks. In fact
that record is crammed
full of hooks and great
choruses that will stick
in your head long after
you have finished
listening. Another
similarity with Pirner
is Kastner’s ability to
assault you with a
‘school of hard knocks’
lyrical approach
particularly evident on
the heartstring snapping
‘Brilliant People’. This
record is also full of
special guest
appearances, Lee Ving
from legendary punk band
Fear lends a hand on
‘Art of War’, whereas
Away from Voivod bangs
the skins on ‘Trainwreck
Magnetism’, even Alex
Lifeson of Rush lends
his guitar to two
tracks.
Despite the sometimes
mid paced nature of a
lot of the songs here,
John Kastner’s above
average songwriting
saves this effort from
drifting anywhere near
mediocrity.
