'We were born just
like giraffes, heads and
shoulders above the
other cats' Free
Diamonds sing on 'Like
Giraffes'. They aren't
kidding either. After
having a demo featured
on Deep Elm's 'This Is
Indie Rock' compilation,
the label decided to
forget its recent policy
of signing wimpy pop
punk acts and Fightstar
and snapped them up for
a full-length release.
The result, 'There
Should Be More Dancing'
is a startlingly unique
debut, taking the
post-hardcore blueprint,
imbuing it with more
bounce than a ten-foot
tall space hopper, then
singing imaginative pop
songs over it in an
insane, helium filled
yell. 'The Day We
Conquered' and 'Cuban
Heels, Cuban Deals' are
dance floor fillers with
a luminous glow, while
'International Gathering
Of Champions' explodes
at the end, all
schizophrenic and crazy.
Emphasising spontaneity
over careful planning in
their song writing
ensures Free Diamonds
have bags of energy, but
after thirteen tracks
it's almost enough to
make you feel positively
lazy. 'There Should Be
More Dancing' is the
musical equivalent of
strapping yourself into
a straight jacket,
drinking five pints of
red bull, then going mad
on a bouncy castle for
an hour. If you have the
energy for it, it's
fucking brilliant.
