This nine-track CD first
appeared in October 2005
but is receiving a
timely boost thanks to
new single 'I don't Care
What you Call Me'
generating decent
airplay on commercial
radio. Anyone expecting
the punk-tinged pop of
Easyworld - Ford's last
band of which he was
front man - might be
disappointed. This is a
grown-up record filled
with songs of loss,
disillusionment and
regret that tread an
altogether more downbeat
path in their theme,
rather than their
execution. But getting
to grips with the nitty
gritty of life's less
appealing moments is
something Ford seems to
relish, really bringing
out the raw emotions
involved without getting
caught up in false
displays of
hand-wringing. The
musical backdrops are
well judged, with plenty
of acoustic moments
letting the lyrics shine
through. The only song
that sits a little
uneasily in this
collection is 'State of
the Union', because its
scathing criticism of
the system loses its
impact on record and the
lush, complex
arrangements (FX pedals
feature prominently)
don’t have the space to
grow that they do in a
live performance - and
I've seen this song
reduce a noisy Brixton
Academy to a hushed
reverence. It’s a debut
offering that marks out
Ford as a genuinely
unique and individual
talent in a sea of
wannabes.
