Combine the new
millennium post-punk
revival with a
reinvigorated indie-rock
scene and you get the
perfect breeding ground
for one of the most
distinctive sounds to
hit the Canadian modern
rock scene in ages. The
band is Controller
Controller and their
latest disc, X-Amounts,
promises to provide
plenty of moody lyrics,
sexy beats and funky
licks. Oh so dark and
mysterious, you can’t
help but feel dangerous
after you listen to this
disk. Their refined
sound, tighter rhythm
section and newly
self-assured
vocalist/queen of
death-disco, delivers a
striking and sultry
package. While each
track provides the lucky
listener with consistent
and enticingly moody
imagery, it’s not hard
to notice that one
crucial ingredient might
be missing from the mix:
hooks. The instantly
memorable melody might
not jump right out at
you but the overall
sound is undeniably
sleek and polished.
‘Tigers Not Daughters’
and ‘Poison/Safe’ are an
instant cure for the
rhythmically challenged.
For those of you who are
old enough to remember
the glory days of
Siouxsie and the Dead
Kennedys, ‘Straight in
The Head’ and ‘Magnetic
Strip’ will strike a
familiar chord. Feeling
dangerous? You will.
