Well it’s been quite a
trip for songbird,
Claire Sproule when you
consider that in only a
few short years she’s
gone from the school
choir to being hailed as
the Irish Norah Jones.
Her debut album, hints
at some very serious
natural talent but there
is some room for growth
before she’ll be worthy
of such lofty
comparisons. Her voice
is both beautiful and
resoundingly clear while
just about every song is
well, pretty. Very
pretty and very likable
When listening to songs
like ‘Doin It My Way’
you can’t help but
picture sunny fields
full of flowers and
butterflies and honestly
there are plenty of days
when this is exactly
what I want to listen
to. It’s easy on the
ears and the light jazzy
arrangements are
uncomplicated and
uplifting. In each song,
Sproule’s ultra-pure
vocals bounce seamlessly
over basic yet
immaculately polished
melodies that hint at
stories of life’s
lessons but the problem
is they never quite
deliver. A lot like
picking up a book and
reading an emotion-laden
tale of love, lust and
abandon only to find out
in the next sentence
that it was written by a
twelve year old.
Sproule’s folk-jazz
medleys show a lot of
promise but lack
something like a hook or
an edge that a bad
break-up or nasty habit
might be able to cure.
There is no denying that
she is talented and has
the kind of vocals
people can’t help but
like. So while high
school confessions are
not exactly
sophisticated there’s
plenty of time for that
since Claire Sproule is
definitely a name that
you will be hearing in
the future.
