If you’re thinking that
with a name
like The Rainbow Family,
the band might sound a
bit ‘trippy’, you
wouldn’t be far wrong.
Having holed themselves
up in the Scottish
mountains to write and
record, and with
influences like
LemonJelly and The Beta
Band, the sound they’ve
produced is unlike
anything currently
troubling either the
charts or the likes of
the NME. Despite some
overtly pop and soul
influences too (Stevie
Wonder, The Beach Boys),
the result is a
collection of songs that
fuse psychedelia with
the more mellow side of
electronic dance music.
In fact, a couple of
tracks are very
reminiscent of The
Avalances hit ‘Since I
left You’ from a couple
of years back. They
certainly live up to
their claim of wanting
to make ‘happy and fun’
music, but there’s still
something of appearing
to be self-consciously
cool about it. You could
imagine this as coffee
table music, if the
owner of the coffee
table in question has a
thing for the quirky and
exotic. However you see
it, it’ll certainly take
a good few listens to
really get into it
because although it
lacks immediacy and
doesn’t instantly grab
you, it’s undeniably
well-crafted and clearly
a labour of love.
