The Five O'Clock Heroes
'Bend To The Breaks'
At last, a debut album
from The Five O’Clock
Heroes, chronicling the
band’s rise and ride to
greatness (well, in
certain circles – so
far).
Recorded in 2005, and
only finished in the
spring of this year due
to a heavy touring
schedule around The
States, ‘Bend To The
Breaks’ blasts forth
with the single that
seems to have been years
gone, ‘Head Games’. It
also includes the single
that precedes this album
by a week, the fantastic
‘Time On My Hands’. The
whole feel of the album
is fresh, young, and
simple, with echoes of
Duran Duran’s
uncomplicated phase in
stand-out track ‘White
Girls’, and a more
jumpy, boyish, modern
theme in ‘Run To Her’.
The record swoops and
rises in tone and feel,
covering various aspects
of human sentiment in a
refreshingly light and
undemanding manner. Put
it this way, this music
isn’t likely to make you
reach for the tissues;
unless you’re
masturbating over how
brilliant it is. I
wouldn’t blame you. The
point is, The Five
O’Clock Heroes don’t
make any attempt to be
something they’re not.
They’re just four boys
that make great shit -
something that’s
ridiculously rare.
