Highlighted in NME’s recent Radar Special (25th November) as one of the bands at the centre of the scene currently spawning in the hitherto out-of-favour Midlands, Coventry upstarts The Ripps now release their debut album “Long Live The Ripps” through Catskills on 19th March 2007. It’s preceded by a single, ‘Loco’ on 5th March.

      The Ripps

Their sound is fast, furious & fun; punk power pop effusive as early Supergrass, but with an outsider edge that stems from brothers Patch (guitar and lead vocals), & Raul Lagunas (bass), whose parents were political activists in General Pinochet’s Chile, living in exile in the UK since the ‘70’s.

Joining them on drums & vocals is close friend Rachel Butt, the trio forming in the autumn of 2003, through a shared love of legends such as The Clash, Pixies, The Buzzcocks and Blur, as well less expected influences like B-52's & The Shangri-la's - and of course the city of Coventry itself (check out the flip of new single ‘Loco’ by the way for their take on Cov hero's The Specials ‘Too Much Too Young’). Indeed the lyrics and astonishing energy of The Ripps is fuelled, in part, by their own love/ hate relationship with their hometown.

For a year they rehearsed every night, experimenting with ideas and forging their own sound. In the autumn of 2004 they performed their first ever gig at the Jug of Ale in Moseley, Birmingham, supporting the then little known band The Editors. They blew the crowd away with their distinctive sound and this gave them the confidence to seek out further gigs around the UK. In proper DIY punk style, they all chipped in and bought a van (lovingly named Sheila!) and set about furiously promoting themselves. This won them gigs playing alongside bands including Young Knives, Maximo Park, Dead 60’s, The Rifles, and of course the attention of Catskills Records.

Que Vivan Los Ripps!
